Tim Price Bloggin' For D'Addario Woodwinds- Coleman Hawkins transcription masterclass.
~Disorder At The Border .....Coleman Hawkins transcription.Part 1.
This was published in 2007 Sonic Magazine from Germany ( also in Dutch as well) I was writing monthly workshop columns for SONIC,and I did a part 1 of this, which is this. I'll post part 2 in a few days..I'm posting this here- it's a blues- but some of the most profound content and substance. A few folks asked about blues solos to learn, and if you start here, you can't go wrong.
........ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4d18S8MlNYc....Here is part 2 of my transcription. These were published in SONIC MAGAZINE in Germany in 2007....in a two part series of workshops I did on Coleman Hawkins. Bb key for tenor.
- This might be one of the greatest four bar phrases in jazz...one of them for sure. Burning. This is part of a series of study's I use with my private students called " HAWK CONCEPTIONS." I USE IT IN CLINICS AND WORKSHOPS AS WELL.
This is a perfect line to get into tempo- and like Hawkins does for vocabulary. Any tenor player worth their salt- has listened to Hawkins in a very important way. These are from bars...73 to 76...through the keys.
CHECK IT OUT ;
NEXT....More12 key study on this solo ; Listen hard to this solo...Chromatics everywhere.
These two measures area hint of his ideas.I take these thru the keys to help the guys see/hear the velocity of this genius called Coleman Hawkins.
...If you play tenor saxophone..you MUST know who this genius is. Search him out on on YOU TUBE and enjoy one of the real ones....Hope this opens some ears and minds. Thank you - TIM PRICE

Tim Price Bloggin' For D'Addario Woodwinds- Irv Cox, from Louis Jordan & his tympany five to Jefferson Starship . Unsung tenor saxophone master with soul & groove. Irv Cox, was that & more!
....
.....If only you believe like I believe, baby, like I believe,We'd get by.If only you believe in miracles, so would I.
If only you believe in miracles, so would I. I might have to move heaven and earth to prove it to you, baby.
So we're making love, you feel the power and I feel the power. And there's really nothing we can('t) do
(You know we could, you know we could If we wanted to.....
...You've heard that song a million times on the radio- hard to miss. If your like me, you always wondered who was the saxophone soloist. He had something special, a soul drenched sound, killer altissimo. In short you could tell he knew the real deal in the horn- that moan in the tone. At a point in time Michael Brecker and I were talking about who this was, Michael thought it could of been a player who might of used a stage name via contract purposes etc. YET...as we both noted there was a swirling feel in his solo, and a definite story he was telling. But who? As time fly's and decades come and go- I run across the name Irv Cox again, but this time on 70's Louie Jordon records!
...That solo on " MIRACLES"...is in the highest level of rock saxophone solos ever. Right up there with history like JIMMY WRIGHT'S SOLO ON- WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE— FRANKIE LYMON & THE TEENAGERS...Or ROMEO PENQUE SAX SOLO ON-SPANISH HARLEM—BEN E. KING...Or...DAVID BROOKS TENOR SAXOPHONE PLAYING- YOU CAN’T SIT DOWN— PHILIP UPCHURCH COMBO. Get my drift?
So...here are some up dates I found when I was traveling through the North and South Carolina areas on Irv Cox- Someome located a YOU TUBE link on Louis Jordan & his tympany five with Irv Cox on it! I had no idea what he looked like nor ever expected to hear him on a YOU TUBE link playing. Wow!!!!! This guy is burning it up. I'm not surprized, as many people have known me to mention Irv's name, and refer to his unreal soulful playing. Now- check this out with Louie Jordan...Louis Jordan & his tympany five ; right here ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55Zvixin2hY. I know sax players worldwide will love this. Sadly Irv passed August 4 2005. He played all the saxes, flute, alto flute & lived in LA for a while then moved back to Charlotte NC. This is the kind of guy that laid down a severe benchmark, what he did stands tall. He also played with Eddie " Cleanhead" Vinson and Johnny Otis...amoung others- See this ;http://www.allmusic.com/artist/irv-cox-mn0001270427/credits
....Well I've come closer to the man's music, talking to someone in North Carolina last week, that walked up to me at a jam session and started to talk to me about Irv Cox. That's why I play music, that essence and the guys who had to play this music. Till next week...If only you believe in miracles, so would I.
If only you believe in miracles, so would I. ...you dig? Strive for tone and remember Irv Cox- Tim Price
