...You've heard that song a million times on the radio- hard to miss. If your like me, you always wondered who was the saxophone soloist. He had something special, a soul drenched sound, killer altissimo. In short you could tell he knew the real deal in the horn- that moan in the tone. At a point in time Michael Brecker and I were talking about who this was, Michael thought it could of been a player who might of used a stage name via contract purposes etc. YET...as we both noted there was a swirling feel in his solo, and a definite story he was telling. But who? As time fly's and decades come and go- I run across the name Irv Cox again, but this time on 70's Louie Jordon records!
...That solo on " MIRACLES"...is in the highest level of rock saxophone solos ever. Right up there with history like JIMMY WRIGHT'S SOLO ON- WHY DO FOOLS FALL IN LOVE— FRANKIE LYMON & THE TEENAGERS...Or ROMEO PENQUE SAX SOLO ON-SPANISH HARLEM—BEN E. KING...Or...DAVID BROOKS TENOR SAXOPHONE PLAYING- YOU CAN’T SIT DOWN— PHILIP UPCHURCH COMBO. Get my drift?
So...here are some up dates I found when I was traveling through the North and South Carolina areas on Irv Cox- Someome located a YOU TUBE link on Louis Jordan & his tympany five with Irv Cox on it! I had no idea what he looked like nor ever expected to hear him on a YOU TUBE link playing. Wow!!!!! This guy is burning it up. I'm not surprized, as many people have known me to mention Irv's name, and refer to his unreal soulful playing. Now- check this out with Louie Jordan...Louis Jordan & his tympany five ; right here ; https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=55Zvixin2hY. I know sax players worldwide will love this. Sadly Irv passed August 4 2005. He played all the saxes, flute, alto flute & lived in LA for a while then moved back to Charlotte NC. This is the kind of guy that laid down a severe benchmark, what he did stands tall. ..Well I've come closer to the man's music,talking to someone in North Carolina last week, that walked up to me at a jam session and started to talk to me about Irv Cox.
